- Introduction
- Cathepsin B (CTSB) is a lysosomal cysteine protease consisting of disulfide-linked dimers of the heavy and light chains, both of which are produced by a single protein precursor. It is also called amyloid precursor protein secretase and is involved in the proteolytic process of amyloid precursor protein (APP). The encoded protein is a member of the C1 family of peptidases, and its overexpression is associated with esophageal adenocarcinoma and other tumors. The gene has been found to have at least five transcript variants encoding the same protein. In addition, studies have shown that the enzyme may have pro-apoptotic functions and can degrade extracellular matrix proteins.
