Introduction
CD147, also known as Basigin (BSG), is a transmembrane glycoprotein, which has different forms due to different glycosylation and N-terminal sequence variations. It is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and has homology to both the immunoglobulin V domain and the MHC class II antigen β chain. BSG plays an important role in various events such as spermatogenesis, embryo implantation, and neural network formation. CD147 induces the production and release of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in surrounding mesenchymal cells and tumor cells, thereby promoting the invasion, metastasis, growth and survival of malignant cells. In addition, CD147 can also serve as a receptor for extracellular cyclophilin, and its binding to integrin may be important in signal transduction.
